As with many walks of life, unfortunately it seems the Tiny House world has its fair share of people wanting something for nothing….I am sure someone somewhere WILL build you an 8m #tinyhouse for £10,000 including luxury kitchen and composting loo AND solar panels and….and and etc!
But the romance of the tiny house lifestyle will have long ago faded when the condensation is running down the cheap windows and the wind is howling under a poorly insulated floor…and you realise you are in a garden shed on wheels!!
Now don’t get me wrong - its a tremendous field for the enthusiastic self-builder with recycled materials etc working to a budget; but at the end of the day you must weigh up the capital investment just as you would when buying conventional property. If in a few years time your tiny house has devalued considerably then your investment is wasted. When we are talking about a sum of money that could have been a deposit for bricks and mortar then you have severely dented your life plan. I am not suggesting don’t do it - just make sure you take it as seriously as you would a ‘normal’ property purchase. In fact in some ways, small spaces require more stringent design in terms of both spatial design and internal environment as the tolerances and parameters are that much tighter and less forgiving.
I would also counsel carefully considering the options of being fully mobile, as in a tiny house, vs choosing a cabin format - which still has status advantages without the constraints of width.
Invest in quality, invest in craftsmanship! Long live craftsmanship!
